The process of smoke firing is ancient, but it can be used as a way of creating a unique and unpredictable surface.

Pieces are loaded into the smoke kiln in layers of sawdust and other combustible materials. This has an effect on the flame and smoke which will create the marks. The weather and atmospheric pressures of the day also influence the mark making process.

Smoke firing produces the surfaces of ancient artefacts through to deep space images of forming stars and nebulas. It is both a process of hope and intentions.
